Biological Treatment

Biological treatment of wastewater is most commonly used in large municipal wastewater operations.  It is also used as a treatment method to reduce the BOD content in wastewater from commercial sources for large volume consumers prior to municipal sewage treatment.

High BOD levels in commercial wastewater is caused by organic matter such as sugars and flour common to the food and beverage manufacturing process.

The purpose of biological treatment is to introduce contact between the bacteria and the wastewater.  The bacteria (cells) feed on the organic material in the wastewater and reduce the BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) content over a period of time.  This organic material is then transformed into a cellular mass and can be removed via separation or settlement leaving the wastewater with reduced BOD levels and thus cleaner wastewater.
